Quinn signs cancer awareness measure |

SPRINGFIELD - Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Tuesday designed to increase awareness among teens about cancer.
The legislation, named "Brandon's Law" after a 19-year-old Taylor Ridge resident who died of testicular cancer last year, requires high school health classes to teach students about cancer.
The cancer education program will include information on risk factors, symptoms of the disease and resources for assistance.
In addition, the Illinois High School Association, which sanctions most high school sports, may require testicular examinations as a part of sports physicals.
The proposal was sponsored by state Sen. Mike Jacobs, D-East Moline, and state Rep. Pat Verschoore, D-Milan, who represent the area where Ballard grew up.
The legislation is Senate Bill 1665.
