DON’T BE ASHAMED-TO LIVE!

The 7th Annual Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation Celebrity Golf Outing is upon us-less than a week away-August 9th at the Muttontown Country Club in East Norwich, Long Island.

But even as the Foundation readies for another day of fun in the sun, filled with golf (some good, some REALLY bad) prizes and food, I'm fully cognizant that 7 years after Sean's death, there is still MUCH work to do in making young men keenly aware of just HOW IMPORTANT early diagnosis and treatment of testicular cancer is.

Monday night I read an online research study claiming that over 60% of testicular cancer patients are embarrassed, sometimes "shamed", at being treated for TC, particularly surgery.

Let's be clear: Nobody likes talking about cancer in any way, shape or form. But cancer, like taxes and another Lindsay Lohan news update, has to be dealt with. That's why the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation is here-to REMIND YOU that if you're a young man between the ages of 15-40, testicular cancer MUST be a part of your vocabulary when you visit your doctor. Regular self-exams are also vital to early detection and treatment. TC is the most common cancer in young men-BUT IF IT'S CAUGHT EARLY, there's a better than 95% survival rate. That means this disease DOESN'T have to kill you! The purpose of the Foundation and this website is to keep young men happy, healthy and full of knowledge that could save their lives.

MEMO: KNOW YOUR BODY: If you have pain or discomfort in the crown jewels, see your MD RIGHT AWAY, IMMEDIATELY, POST HASTE. Look, if you got drilled in the privates by a 110 pound girl in your Martial Arts class, you'd CRAWL to the doc at the first sign of trouble!

If you've ever thrown you're back out ‘cause a buddy moved left instead of right with your couch on move in day, you'd seek medical attention tout de suite (that's fancy French for REALLY DAMN FAST!)

Remember the day you thought the whole core of your body was gone after trying to squat 220 pounds without a belt on to support you? Well, I do. I now move more gingerly around weights than a 6 year old at her first ballet class!

Hey, if you had a bug bite on your arm that didn't go away, you'd be searching WebMD like a pro-so why ignore that lump in the "nether region?"

In case you didn't notice, all these little scenarios could be a sign that there is a problem with your testicles. There, I just said the word-PROBLEM. Guys being guys, we tend to ignore things until or unless we have to. That has to change-we're talking life and death here boys. Shame and embarrassment when you're trying to stay alive-you know where they need to go.

Any guy squeamish about being checked out because he doesn't want to freak out a current or future wife or girlfriend will soon realize she's not Miss Right. Think your buddies at the gym might giggle some? Get new friends. Surround yourself with people who are in your corner 24/7-just like The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation.

Today's blog is a reminder to young men to be diligent with their health. You only get one body and a limited time to use it on planet Earth. So take advantage of the resources at seankimerling.org. Watch the hilarious videos and learn the facts about testicular cancer. We'll even show you how to perform a self-exam. Guys play with themselves enough in the shower. Why not make it a life affirming experience? You'll live longer and your loved ones will be glad to have you around-something that would make Sean extremely proud.

written by James P. Piccoli, August 03, 2010
Great Blog, Bobby. We, as men, all need to be reminded that diligence is necessary to maintain our health. It does not matter how old we are, we need to be aware that illness can strike at any age. Thank you for the reminder and making salient points related to the disease. Sean Kimerling was a solid professional and an even better person. It is wonderful to see the fight against Testicular Cancer in his honor. The 7th Annual Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation Celebrity Golf Outing is a wonderful tribute to Sean and a wonderful fund raiser for research into treatment for this insidious disease. God Bless Sean and all that are dear to him. Always remembering him fondly.
