About Testicular Cancer:

Almost every hour of every day one man in the U.S. is diagnosed with testicular cancer (TC). It is the most common cancer in men 15 – 35 years old, and incidence rates have been steadily increasing for decades. It is highly treatable—in fact, 99% curable—when found and treated at its earliest stages. In the case of TC, awareness truly is the cure.

About the Foundation:

The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation (SKTCF) is dedicated to raising Awareness, providing Answers, and promoting Action in the fight against TC. The foundation was formed in 2003 in memory of Sean Kimerling, the Emmy Award winning PIX11 sportscaster and pre-game announcer for the NY Mets. Sean died at the age of 37 from TC.  Headquartered in New York City, the Foundation has strong ties to local sports teams and media. A registered 501(c)(3) public charity, SKTCF is nationally recognized as a key resource in the fight against TC.

Things Remembered Partners with The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation with the Introduction of “Man Balls"

Leading personalization retailer contradicts all brand perceptions in a bold effort to raise funds and awareness that early detection of testicular cancer is critical to survival

CLEVELAND – Almost every hour of every day, one man in the United States will be diagnosed with testicular cancer – the most common cancer in young men ages 15 to 35. Realizing this disease is targeting the men in the lives of its customers, Things Remembered, the leading national retailer of personalized gifts, is aligning efforts with The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation to spread the word to its predominantly female customer base about the importance of reminding the men in their lives to perform regular self-checks for lumps and get checked by a physician when they are experiencing symptoms. While highly treatable if caught early, “half of all men diagnosed with testicular cancer do not seek medical attention until after the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.

At age 37, Sean Kimerling, a beloved, Emmy Award winning sportscaster and pre-game announcer for the New York Mets, died of testicular cancer. Prior to his diagnosis, Sean experienced pain, which he attributed to a potential workout or sports injury and postponed going to his doctor. When he finally saw a physician, the time span between diagnosis and his tragic passing was about 30 days. Shortly after his passing, his family and friends fulfilled Sean’s mission of raising awareness about the disease and formed the nationwide The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation in his honor.

Beginning October 1st, the retailer will offer a new line of engravable, male-centric bobble-head water globes, affectionately known as “Man Balls.” There are six versions – including Beer Man, The Boss, The Ladies’ Man and The Workaholic – that each celebrate and cajole men for their occasionally irksome, yet always loveable idiosyncrasies.

$2 of every Man Ball sale will go directly to The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to raising awareness of testicular cancer and the importance of early detection. Through the partnership, Things Remembered and the Foundation will focus on raising money and communicating the importance of early detection to the brand’s traditionally female customer base, the general public and the media. With women making approximately 80% of health care decisions for families, the retailer’s customers have tremendous power to foster awareness among the men in their lives about the most common cancer in men ages 15 to 35.

In November through December, in celebration of the international “Movember” movement, Things Remembered and the Foundation will host a celebrity charity auction of autographed Man Balls through eBay’s Giving Works program, with 100% of proceeds going to The Foundation.

“With early detection, testicular cancer has a cure rate of more than 90%. Unfortunately, at an age when most men feel invincible, many are unaware of the facts or uncomfortable with self-checks and talking with their doctors,” explains Amy Myers, Vice President of Creative Services at Things Remembered. “The majority of our customers are women with tremendous influence over their family’s health care decisions. By introducing Man Balls, we hope our manliest globes ever, serve as an educational tool to remind men to self-check themselves for lumps — a vital routine for early detection.”

“Our mission, in my son Sean’s memory, has always been to communicate the importance of early detection and treatment. Therefore we are pleased to be partnering with Things Remembered to reach so many people, who are close with men most at-risk for testicular cancer,” said Noah Kimerling, president and CEO of the Foundation.

“I found the most jarring statistic to be that half of all men diagnosed do not seek medical attention until after the cancer has spread, and then the chance of survival decreases as the disease progresses,” said Myers. “This topic makes people uncomfortable, but embarrassment is a major reason why many men go undiagnosed and the cancer spreads. If we can help save lives by starting this vital conversation in an approachable, but attention-grabbing way, then we have done what we set out to achieve with this product line and partnership.”

In taking this daring step to introduce a product line so contradictory to the refinement and sophistication of the brand, Things Remembered hopes the eye-catching program will attract the attention of its customers and young men most at risk for this disease, by speaking to them honestly and openly about testicular cancer.
